Homework
Homework Binders
Each student will have a homework binder containing a reading calendar, math packet, writing assignment, and spelling list. Students are expected to bring this binder to school every day!
- Reading minutes are to be recorded on the monthly reading calendar and returned to school at the end of each month.
- Math packets will change with each math topic we are covering in class. I will let you know which pages to complete each week.
- Write & Share assignments will be sent home on Fridays. Your child should be ready to share on their share day the following week.
- Spelling tests will be on Fridays. The following week's spelling list will be sent home on Fridays. If your child receives a 100% on the Friday pre-test, they will receive a list of Challenge Words on Monday of the following week.
Reading
First graders are expected to read approximately 20 minutes daily at home. Parents are encouraged to read to their children (to model appropriate fluency), in addition to listening to their child read. Both ways count toward the daily reading minutes expectation. By the end of each month, your first grader should have read (or been read to) for at least 400 minutes. Spirit necklace charms will be awarded at the end of each month to those students who have met or exceeded the monthly reading minutes goal.
Math
Students will be learning first grade Common Core Math Standards through our enVisions Math curriculum. Each week, I will assign math pages for students to complete each day in their topic math packet that match the standards we are learning in class. All students are expected to complete the Reteaching and Practice pages in the math packets. The Enrichment pages are extra credit and a way for students to show me they really know their stuff!
Writing
Write and Share! New writing assignments are sent home on Fridays. These assignments weave many skills together: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. ALL the answers must be in complete sentences and practiced prior to their presentation day. Every child will have a consistent assigned weekday for sharing.
