Dear parents,
It was so great to see many of you at Curriculum Night. If you were unable to attend, please check your child’s homework binder for the handouts. Please fill out the yellow list of writing topics and return to school. Your list will help me and your child generate ideas for their small moment writing. Please list topics that your child could write about from their lives (ie. your birthday party, when grandma visited, the swimming pool, etc.). I have also posted the PowerPoint and some of the handouts from Curriculum Night on our class website: http://mrszylstra.weebly.com/curriculum-night.html.
Dates to Remember
Homework
Reading – Please return September reading calendars with the total minutes read calculated. If you wouldn’t mind, please enter your child’s reading minutes on our class website. Go to the Homework tab and click on “September Reading Minutes” on the drop-down menu. Please enter your child’s first name and the number of minutes they read in September. I will send home new October reading calendars tomorrow. Keep up the good reading habits!
Math – Our new Math Topic 2 packet, Understanding Subtraction, went home on Friday. This week we will cover lessons 2-1 through 2-3. Please have your child complete those pages in the packet.
Write & Share – Our new Write & Share assignment is Apples, Apples, Apples. I included next week’s Write & Share assignment, Leaves, for those kiddos who share earlier in the week to be able to get a head start.
Spelling – This week, we are studying short /o/ words. If your child scored 100% on the pre-test, they will receive a list of challenge words on Monday. Look for this list in your child’s homework binder.

Learning
There is a lot of learning happening in Room 22! Here is what we are focusing on this week…
- Language/Grammar – Sentences always begin with a capital letter.
- Spelling – Short /o/ words.
- Math – Subtraction equations can be interpreted in multiple ways. This week, students are learning that when the “whole” and one “part” are known, they can find the missing part. (for example, 8 – __ = 5 and 8 – 3 = __, where 3 and 5 are the “parts” and 8 is the “whole”).
- Writing – Students are working on zooming in on their small moment stories and unfreezing their characters, making them move and talk.
- Science – Children will be conducting their own investigations and asking “What is a Scientist?” If time permits, we will begin an investigation surrounding the idea of “What is alive and what isn’t?” involving brine shrimp. We will also go to Centennial Field on Wednesday and help real scientists plant a rain garden to control pollution run-off!
- Reading – In addition to the instruction students receive in their Power Up classes, our homeroom class will also be working to build our “Read to Self” stamina and practicing how to choose “Just Right Books.”
Have a wonderful week!
